La Ventosa sits on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca at the narrowest point of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where the landscape funnels wind off the Gulf of Mexico and fires it toward the Pacific with remarkable force. The result is the Tehuano — a north-to-northwest katabatic flow that runs at 20 to 50-plus knots and has given this stretch of coastline a reputation as one of the windiest kite destinations on the planet. The nearest town is Salina Cruz, about 15 kilometres west. Getting to Playa Azul means following the coastal road east, where the wind starts announcing itself well before you arrive. On a full Tehuano day you feel it in the car. The beach is wide, sandy, and fully exposed. Playa Azul is the main launch point, with Playa Brasil and Salinas del Marqués as additional stretches of coastline along the same wind corridor. The launch area is where La Ventosa earns its expert-only status. The Tehuano doesn't behave like a predictable thermal or sea breeze — it can surge suddenly, gust sharply, and turn the beach into a chaotic scene with sand blasting horizontally and kites moving in all directions. Self-launching without a reliable, experienced launch partner is a serious mistake here. Brief your team before you rig, agree on abort signals, and be prepared to stand down if the conditions are beyond your margin on that particular day. On the water, the Tehuano produces a sideshore to side-offshore flow across the usable wind window of 130 to 310 degrees. At full strength the sea state builds fast — expect choppy, overpowered conditions when the wind is running hard. Advanced freeriders and wave riders comfortable in powerful, unpredictable conditions tend to get the most from it. Flat-water sections exist closer to shore, but this is not a spot for casual cruising on a large kite. Season matters. The Tehuano runs year-round with one significant exception: August through October is the low period and the wind drops off considerably. Outside that window the Tehuano is reliable, though even in peak season it can disappear for a day and return at full force — patience is part of the deal. Facilities on the beach are minimal. Come fully self-sufficient: food, water, sunscreen, and all your own gear. Salina Cruz, 15 kilometres west, is the practical base for accommodation, supplies, and any repairs you might need. There is no kite school or rental infrastructure here — La Ventosa selects for experienced, self-sufficient kiters who know their limits.
