Ciudad del Carmen sits on Isla del Carmen, an island in the state of Campeche, with the Laguna de Términos on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. The kite spot is on the lagoon side — flat, protected water that stays calm even when the wind is up, which is exactly why riders make the effort to get here. This is a low-key spot. There's no commercial kite school on the launch, no kite flags fluttering outside a beach bar — just a lagoon edge, the wind, and whoever else has figured out that this place works. Expect to share the water mostly with locals and the occasional visiting rider who did their homework. Wind arrives predominantly from the north and southeast, running between 12 and 25 knots during the main season from December through May. The usable kite window spans the westerly-to-easterly arc — from 270° through north to 90° — which captures the reliable northerly fronts that push through in winter and the southeast shifts that follow. When a northerly is running on the lagoon, conditions can be excellent. North winds in this region can carry real push, and the 25-knot top end is not just theoretical. The lagoon does the heavy lifting here. Shielded from open swell, the water surface stays flat or lightly textured — ideal for powered riding, working on freestyle tricks, or simply laying down quick runs without fighting chop. The expanse of the lagoon gives you plenty of room to work without immediately worrying about the far bank, and the shallow, sheltered conditions give you some buffer if you drift downwind. Getting there: Ciudad del Carmen is connected to the mainland by road, so you can drive in. The city has standard services, and the lagoon edge is reachable from the waterfront. Plan on a short local reconnaissance to identify the best launch point — the shoreline character varies along the island. For accommodation, Hotel Acuario, Hotel Estrella de Mar, and Eurohotel are all options in the city. The food situation nearby is broad: Artigiano Trattoria Rústica and Bariloche for a proper sit-down meal, Bocafe and Barezzito for lighter stops, and Burger King and Dairy Queen for zero-friction post-session fuel. Hot dogs y hamburguesas Vip is the local street-food pick worth knowing. This is a workman's kite destination — flat water, seasonal reliability, real city infrastructure. No kite-tourism circus, but also no hand-holding. If you want a polished resort setup, look elsewhere. If you want a clean protected lagoon with consistent seasonal wind and a fraction of the crowd, Ciudad del Carmen is worth knowing about.
