About Ada Bojana

Ada Bojana sits at the mouth of the Bojana River on a triangular delta island straddling the Montenegro–Albania border, south of Ulcinj. The name says it all: 'ada' is Montenegrin for river island, and this place is defined by the meeting of two water worlds — the open Adriatic and the calm, shallow arms of the Bojana River. That dual personality is what makes it genuinely interesting for kiters. The main kite beach runs along the southwestern shore facing the Adriatic — broad, sandy, and with enough room to rig and launch without drama. The river-facing side is a different story: flat, mirror-calm water in the shallow lagoon arms, sheltered from any Adriatic swell. If you're chasing freestyle tricks or working on upwind without fighting chop, the river arm is where sessions happen. The wind is the Maestral — the classic Adriatic afternoon sea breeze that kicks in around noon and runs through to sundown. It blows steadily from May through September, averaging around 15–18 knots across the season with peaks reaching 20 knots. The wind window runs broadly SE to NW (135°–315°), putting the breeze onshore on the southwest beach. Mornings can be glassy and completely flat; patience pays off when the Maestral fills in reliably by midday. The southwest Adriatic beach picks up some chop once the wind builds — nothing severe, but worth knowing if you're a beginner looking for learning conditions. That's what the river arm solves: flat, warm, shallow water where upwind recoveries are painless and confidence builds fast. Ada Bojana has a well-established kite scene. Beach infrastructure is solid — showers, toilets, and loungers are available between sessions. Earlier months can be patchier; late season adds variability but can still produce solid sessions. For skill level, the flat river lagoon works well for beginners and intermediates — manageable wind, flat water, and kite schools on hand. The Adriatic-facing beach suits intermediate-plus riders comfortable with chop. The river mouth confluence is worth keeping in mind as a reference point for current and drift when kiting near the channel.
