About Velika Plaza (Ulcinj Long Beach)

Velika Plaza — translating simply to 'Big Beach' — earns that name. At 12 kilometres, it is the longest sandy beach in Europe, running south from the old town of Ulcinj along Montenegro's Adriatic coastline. The beach faces west, and that orientation matters: the usable kite window spans from due south through west to north (180°–359°), and the summer Mistral blows right into the sweet spot of that arc. Getting here from Ulcinj town is straightforward — the beach road heads south from the old quarter, and most kiters park up along the shore and walk to a stretch that suits them. With 12 kilometres of sand, you are rarely competing for launch room, even in mid-July. The entry is about as clean as it gets. Gently shelving sand, no rocks, no reefs, no significant current — just a shallow, obstacle-free shore that gives you breathing room when things go sideways. Water stays shallow for a meaningful distance out, which keeps most beginner mistakes manageable. Wind character is defined by the south-westerly Mistral, which typically builds in the early-to-mid afternoon, arriving around 14:00–15:00. In peak season — June through September — you can count on rideable conditions roughly four days out of seven. Wind speeds typically run 12 to 22 knots, which means the same day that suits a 15m kite in the morning lull might call for a 12m by mid-afternoon. Mornings are usually light and calm, so Velika Plaza rewards patience over the early alarm. The water texture is flat to light chop inside the bay, building as the Mistral strengthens. The cross-onshore angle of a south-westerly keeps you working along the beach and gives a comfortable margin before the wind pushes you toward shore. No significant obstacles in the water means your attention stays on riding. A kiteloop school operates on the beach, making instruction and rental gear accessible without a trip into town. Four kilometres to the south, at the point where the Bojana River meets the Adriatic, sits Ada Bojana — Montenegro's other established kite hub. The two spots are easy to combine on a longer trip, each with a distinct feel: Velika Plaza for the long open beach, Ada Bojana for the river delta texture and its own infrastructure. This is a strong mid-summer destination for intermediates and upwards. Beginners will find the shallow water and on-site school reassuring; more experienced riders will appreciate the consistent afternoon thermal and the sheer scale of the beach to work with.
