About Sidi Kaouki

Sidi Kaouki sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast roughly 25 kilometres south of Essaouira, on a wide, open west-facing beach that catches the region's prevailing north-easterly trade wind clean and unobstructed. Where Essaouira funnels wind through its medina walls, Sidi Kaouki has nothing in the way — expect conditions to run 5 to 10 knots stronger here, with summer thermals regularly pushing into the 30–40 knot range. This is a spot that earns its reputation. The approach from Essaouira is straightforward: head south along the coastal road and the village of Sidi Kaouki appears organically, built around the beach rather than engineered for tourism. The beach itself is broad, with both wave and flat-water sections depending on where you set up — the shape of the shoreline lets you pick your riding style. Wind direction is north-easterly, which makes it side-shore on this west-facing beach — the best possible angle for a clean launch and a safe downwind escape if things turn. The usable kite window runs from south (180°) all the way around through east to north (0°), giving you ample kite-flying room overhead. For riding, the spot genuinely suits all levels. Beginners can find flatter water and a forgiving launch zone; intermediates and advanced riders can push into the wave sections where the Atlantic delivers a proper swell. It is not a one-trick spot. On the beach you have what you need without driving anywhere. Balladi Surf School is here for lessons and likely gear rental if you haven't brought your own. For food there are a handful of options — Abdou Taguenza, AL VENT, Chez Iziki, and Chez Momo cover everything from a quick coffee to a sit-down meal. If you're staying overnight or longer, Blue Kaouki Hotel, Auberge de la plage, Auberge Du Marabout, Cozy Tigmino, and Dar osho are all close to the beach. The strongest conditions arrive with summer thermals, and 30–40 knots is not unusual on those days. Come prepared with a smaller kite and don't underestimate the power. On lighter days the conditions are more manageable for riders still building confidence. One thing worth noting: this is a proper Atlantic beach, not a lagoon. The swell can be significant and the water moves. Walk the launch area, check what is downwind of you, and make sure you are comfortable before you rig up. There is no flat-water refuge if you get overpowered in the surf zone. Sidi Kaouki has the rare quality of rewarding you whether you are chasing personal records or simply looking for a reliable spot to clock up sessions. The trade wind is consistent, the beach is wide, and the village has enough to keep you fed, rested, and riding for as long as you want to stay.
