About Vilanculos

Vilanculos sits in Mozambique's Inhambane Province, where the coastline curves around a wide, sheltered bay facing the Bazaruto Archipelago. The offshore islands help keep the inner bay calm while the SE and NE trades funnel through reliably for most of the year. It's one of East Africa's standout kite setups — and once you've seen the sandbars at low tide, it makes immediate sense. The beach is close to town centre, which keeps logistics uncomplicated — no long drives, no complex access. The launch is a wide sandy strip with plenty of room to rig and sort your lines without feeling cramped. What sets Vilanculos apart is what happens when the tide drops. Large sandbars emerge across the bay, leaving waist-deep water stretching well out from shore. You can walk your gear out, get organised, and launch with space around you. The bottom is sand throughout — warm, clear, and forgiving. You can see what's underfoot before you commit to anything. Wind arrives from the SE and NE trade directions, typically running 15–22 knots through the season. The usable kite window covers 330° through to 150°, so both dominant trade directions sit well within the arc. Best months are August through March — outside that window the trades lighten and consistency drops. When the wind is on, daytime sessions are reliable. The spot suits all levels, though it particularly rewards beginners and freestyle riders. Beginners get shallow water, a sandy bottom, and room to work through mistakes without pressure. Freestyle riders get proper flat water over the sandbars — clean pop and consistent power on a predictable surface. Intermediates can push further out into choppier conditions when they want more of a challenge. Tide timing is the main thing to plan around. At high tide the sandbars disappear and the bay deepens; at low tide it turns into something close to a lagoon. Get a local tide table before you arrive and schedule your sessions around the drop. In town, the food and drink options are solid. Restaurante Frutos de Mar and Samara Restaurant are the places for a proper sit-down meal after a session. Kilimanjaro Cafe, Café Moçambicano, Palmeiras, Alemanha, and Mangas Chicken cover coffee, snacks, and casual eating at local prices — this isn't a tourist-premium strip. Vilanculos earns its reputation. The Bazaruto backdrop, reliable trades, and natural flat-water conditions make it a genuine destination on the East African kite circuit.
