About Ngapali Beach

Ngapali Beach is Myanmar's most celebrated stretch of coastline — a 3 km arc of sand on the Bay of Bengal in Rakhine State, west-facing and open to the full fetch of the Indian Ocean. For kiters, it's a frontier destination in the truest sense: no permanent school, no kite-specific infrastructure, just a long beach and consistent seasonal wind. The main productive window runs with the SW monsoon, roughly May through October. Winds arrive side-onshore at this west-facing beach and typically sit in the 15–25 knot range — a powered season well-suited to intermediate and advanced riders who are comfortable in open ocean conditions. The Bay of Bengal can stack up a short, textured chop when the wind builds, so expect some movement on the water rather than glassy flats. November through March is the NE dry season. Wind drops to a lighter 10–18 knot range with frontal patterns — less consistent, but the beach itself is calmer and the crowds are thinner. Riders who prefer finessing smaller kites or want a more relaxed atmosphere might prefer this window, though you'll need to size up significantly on your kite to stay powered. The usable wind arc runs from 180° through 359° — south through west through north — which suits the beach's west-facing orientation well. When the SW monsoon is properly established, direction tends to sit comfortably inside that arc and hold steady for hours at a time. Watch the rocky sections. They are scattered along parts of the shoreline and not always obvious until you are walking your kite across them. Booties are worth packing regardless of season — there is no hire shop here to help you out. The same logic applies to everything else: no kite school operates permanently at Ngapali, so self-rescue, relaunching, and body dragging all need to be solid before you show up. This is not a destination for first-time kiters. Getting there means routing through Thandwe, the nearest town at around 8 km. Thandwe has a domestic airport, which is the most practical way in from Yangon or Mandalay. Road access exists but the journey is long and the area remains genuinely off the beaten kite trail. At the beach, food is well covered. Blue Lagoon, Golden Fish, Nan Cherry, Ocean Pearl, Sea Queen, SeeZein, and Shwe Nan are all beachfront restaurants — solid options for refuelling between sessions. For kite gear, spares, or repairs, you are on your own, so pack redundantly. For experienced riders who want to explore somewhere that has not been picked clean of novelty, Ngapali delivers. Arrive prepared, aim for May–October for the strongest and most reliable wind, and give the rocky patches the respect they deserve.
