About Swakopmund Beach

Swakopmund sits where the Namib Desert meets the South Atlantic — a small coastal town on Namibia's Erongo coast that punches well above its weight as a kite destination. The beach runs long and straight, facing west, and the Benguela Current does most of the heavy lifting on wind. From May through September, that same current drives reliable S-SW wind across the beach, typically in the 18–30 knot range. The usable kite window runs from south through west, which gives you a broad arc to work with and keeps sessions going as the breeze moves through the day. This is one of the more consistent kite windows on the African continent — predictable enough to plan a trip around, not just hope for. Getting to the water is simple. Swakopmund is a compact, well-organised town, and the beach is genuinely easy to reach. The Namibia Kite Center operates here, so local instruction and gear support are on hand — useful if you're arriving without your own kit or just want a local briefing before you rig up. One thing you don't negotiate on: a wetsuit. The Benguela Current is an upwelling of cold Antarctic water, and it keeps the ocean cold year-round regardless of air temperature or season. A 3/2 is a reasonable baseline during the main kite window; go thicker outside the peak months, and booties are worth packing. Wind chill on the water amplifies the cold — dress warmer than the air temperature suggests. The beach itself is long enough to give intermediates and more experienced riders room to work. The W-facing aspect means the S-SW predominant wind typically runs side-to-side or slightly side-onshore — manageable conditions for launching and landing once you know the beach. Beginners should use the Namibia Kite Center for proper instruction before going out solo; the consistent breeze can be a lot to handle without fundamentals in place. After the session, the waterfront area has solid options. The Raft, Rojo Seaside Pub & Restaurant, Anchors @ The Jetty, Dock Side, Godenfang, and La Bella Vita cover the restaurant side. Dolphins Coffee Shop, Sahra's, and the Walvis Bay Angling Club fill out the bar and café end. A warm meal after cold water is easy to find, and you'll want it. Outside the May–September Benguela window, conditions are lighter and less consistent. The prime kite season is well-defined here — plan your flights around it. Swakopmund itself adds to the draw: Namib desert dunes on one side, a quirky German colonial-era town centre, seal colonies within reach. But kiters come for the beach and the Benguela, and when it's on, it delivers.
