Walvis Bay Speedstrip sits at the southern end of Walvis Bay lagoon on Namibia's Atlantic coast, positioned behind a massive natural sandbar that transforms the lagoon into one of the most remarkable speed-sailing venues on the planet. The geography is what makes it special: roughly 2 kilometres of exceptionally flat, smooth water, completely sheltered from Atlantic swell by that sandbar barrier, with south and south-westerly winds funnelling cleanly down the channel without obstruction. The wind here is the headline. SW and S winds arrive at 25 to 40 knots during the prime window, which runs September and October — the local speed season when conditions consistently stack up for serious fast riding. When everything lines up, the combination of strong, steady wind and glassy water is precisely why this spot has hosted international speed sailing events and seen legitimate world-class GPS speed records established here. That heritage makes the skill requirement clear. This is advanced to expert terrain, full stop. The wind range alone — starting at 25 knots and spiking to 40 — means the margin for error is slim. You need confident big-wind handling, solid jibe mechanics at speed, and the judgement to manage sudden gust spikes without losing control. The water is the reward for experienced riders: genuinely flat, predictable, and fast.
