About Domburg

Domburg sits on the northwest tip of Walcheren island in Zeeland, where the North Sea arrives with nothing to soften it. The beach faces straight into the prevailing Atlantic weather, making this a proper open-coast wave spot rather than anything sheltered or forgiving. The Westkapelle lighthouse stands visible to the southwest — a useful bearing point once you are out on the water. The approach is straightforward. Domburg is a well-established seaside resort, so roads and signposting are reliable. The beach is broad and sandy, backed by dunes, and the town's resort infrastructure means restaurants, accommodation, and basic services are all close at hand. Summer weekends fill up fast — arriving early gives you better choices and room to rig without fighting the crowd. The wind arc runs from roughly south-southwest (205°) around through west and northwest all the way to north (5°). Sessions are best when W-NW winds are blowing, as that direction puts the full North Sea fetch behind the conditions. The exposure here is real — you get genuine open-ocean swell alongside the wind, and the two together immediately define the character of the riding. This is not a lagoon. Two hazards demand your attention before you get in the water. First, rows of wooden poles extend from the beach in sections. Identify where they are before you launch, factor them into your kite arc, and stay clear of them in the water — especially in bigger swell when visibility drops and you can lose track of your position. Second, strong currents run along this stretch of coast. Swell, current, and poles together push Domburg firmly into intermediate-to-advanced territory. If you are still building your foundation skills, look for calmer water elsewhere in Zeeland. Here you need solid self-rescue, confidence reading moving water, and real comfort in a wave environment. The spot's popularity with windsurfers is a useful signal: this is a wind-and-wave venue, not a beginner bay. When the conditions line up — proper W-NW pressure with a swell running — the riding is genuinely rewarding. Consistent open-ocean ramps, a natural swell rhythm, and good wind quality make it worth the trip for kiters who want a real wave session on the Dutch coast. Post-session, the town delivers. For food and drinks, Café Tramzicht, De Paalhoofd, De Domburger, 't Friethuis, 't Koetshuis, and De Domburgsche Bier- en Melksalon are all within the resort.
