About Grevelingendam

The Grevelingendam spans the Grevelingen sea inlet between Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee — the fourth of the major structures built as part of the Netherlands' Delta Works programme. As a kitesurf spot, it's genuinely unusual: you're launching alongside hydraulic engineering rather than a sandy beach, and that sets both the character of the session and the hazards you need to plan around. Getting here is straightforward — the dam is a road crossing between the two islands, accessible by car from either side of the Zeeland delta. Parking is on or adjacent to the dam, but this is functioning infrastructure, not a leisure beach. Follow the signage and stick to designated areas. The Grevelingendam kite school operates on site, and if you're new to the spot, that's your first conversation. Local instructors know which sections are in use, how the dam layout plays out on any given day, and what to watch for before you launch. The usable wind arc runs from 270° through north to 90°, covering westerly, northwesterly, northerly, and easterly directions. For Zeeland, that captures the prevailing winds that drive the region's stronger sessions. When a west or northwest pushes in across the Grevelingen's open water, the fetch builds and the surface picks up real texture. From the north or northeast, conditions tend to be cleaner and more manageable. When the forecast turns southerly or south-westerly, the arc closes and the spot is off the list for that day. The Grevelingen is a sea inlet, not a sheltered lagoon. The channel between the two islands has its own character — water that moves and reacts rather than sits flat. Chop and surface conditions shift with wind direction and strength, so reading the day before you launch is time well spent. That dam structure is the hazard to take seriously. Hydraulic engineering means hard concrete edges close to the water. Know your launch point, know your landing zone, and know what's downwind of you before the kite goes up. This is not the spot to wing it — a clear plan is non-negotiable. In the right conditions, the Grevelingen delivers room to work. Intermediate to experienced riders can get quality sessions here when the wind is on. It's not a beginner venue — dam hazards and active channel water demand solid kite control — but for riders who know what they're doing, it's a rewarding Dutch stop. Post-session, both Grevelingen and Puurr are on the spot's facilities list for food and a proper debrief.
