Ameland sits in the Dutch Wadden Sea, a chain of barrier islands strung across the top of the Netherlands. Hollum occupies the western tip of the island, and its beach faces northwest into the open North Sea — which means when the wind swings southwest, this spot wakes up. The approach is straightforward. Park for free at the end of Oranjeweg and walk through the dunes to the beach. The sand is wide and backed by dune ridges and coastal vegetation, giving you room to rig without drama. The designated kite zone runs between poles 3 and 4 — stick to that corridor and you'll share the beach without conflict. The width is generous enough for kite buggy riders too, so expect company in that lane on good days. Southwest wind (180°–270°) is what you're here for. The northwest-facing shore catches it well, and when it's on, the North Sea fetch delivers proper conditions: real waves, real chop, and water that deepens quickly as you move offshore. This is not a flat-water nursery. Waves can stack up with serious height and tidal currents run strong through the channel. The combination makes Hollum a spot that rewards experience — beginners should sit this one out. The current is worth treating with respect. It doesn't announce itself with signage; you feel it when you're in it. Know your upwind angles before you head out, and be clear about where the safe exit points are if you end up downwind and tired. Deep water arrives fast once you clear the shallows, so self-rescue drills matter here. For intermediate and advanced riders who've handled North Sea conditions before, the wave riding can be excellent when the swell is running. The beach is wide enough for a decent run-up on landing, and the dune backdrop gives some natural shelter during rigging. After a session, Hollum has options. Onder de Vuurtoren and Eeterij Tante A'n are worth the short walk into the village. If you're staying on the island, Landal Ameland and Landal Vakantiepark Boomhiemke both handle groups, while De Hofstede and Gruppenhaus Hof van Hollum are smaller options. Kampeerboerderij de Kuul suits the camp-and-kite crowd. Ameland is a ferry island, which means your gear travels with you on the crossing from the mainland. Factor that into your planning — ferry schedules don't flex for swell windows. This is a North Sea beach doing what North Sea beaches do: wide, exposed, and uncompromising.
