About Buren Waddenzee (Ameland)

Buren sits on the southern, Waddenzee-facing shore of Ameland — one of the Dutch Wadden Islands reached by ferry from the mainland port of Holwerd. It is the only kitesurf spot on the island that faces the Waddenzee, making it a distinctly different proposition from Ameland's three North Sea spots. Where the North Sea side at Hollum delivers raw, exposed waves, Buren offers something considerably calmer: flat, shallow Waddenzee water that suits a different style of riding. Getting here means taking the ferry from Holwerd. The crossing drops you at the pier in Buren, and that pier also functions as the launch area — a convenient setup where you step off the boat and are essentially at the water's edge. The village is small, with the waterfront close at hand for gear and parking logistics. The wind arc runs from south through southwest — 180° to 270° — so you need SW to S wind to make this spot work. When those conditions arrive, the Waddenzee delivers the flattest water on the island. Conditions here are described as beginner-friendly relative to the rest of Ameland, which is fair: without ocean swell or breaking waves, it is a manageable environment for building skills and logging hours in a low-stress setting. That said, flat water does not mean low consequence. Tidal currents are the dominant hazard at Buren. The Waddenzee moves with the tide, and current direction and speed shift across the session. A downwind drift in moving water can push you into areas you did not intend, so solid upwind ability and a clear understanding of where the current is running before you launch are essential. There are also designated kite zones on Ameland that all riders must stay within — know the boundaries before you get on the water. On the water itself, when conditions align, this is flat-water kiting at its most straightforward. No chop to fight, no swell to read. It suits technique work, practicing toeside, or simply cruising in a clean environment. Low tide can expose shallow sections, so be prepared to walk out depending on tide height.
