Southwesterly winds are the most common and generally work well here, sweeping across the open barrier with good fetch. Westerly and northwesterly directions can also produce solid sessions depending on which side of the barrier you launch from.

Wind acceleration across the barrier means conditions can be punchier than the forecast suggests, so erring on the side of a smaller kite for your first session here is a reasonable approach.

Yes — the storm surge barrier pillars create localised wind shadows and turbulence, so launching well away from them matters. The Oosterschelde side has tidal currents that can be stronger than expected. Boat and shipping traffic through the barrier channels is also worth watching, particularly during busier months.

Neeltje Jans is located on the N57 highway in the province of Zeeland, roughly 50km southwest of Rotterdam. Follow signs toward the Deltapark Neeltje Jans or Delta Expo. Ample parking is available on site. There is no direct train connection, so a car is the most practical option.

Several restaurants are within easy reach, including Bij Jans aan Zee, Strandpaviljoen Atlantis, Proef Zeeland, and the Neeltje Jans Delta Expo Restaurant. Parking is plentiful. The Delta Expo visitor centre adds an interesting cultural dimension if you're travelling with non-kiters.

The Grevelingenmeer side, with its calmer flatwater conditions, can be well suited to foiling, particularly in lighter summer winds. The tidal Oosterschelde side is less ideal for foil sessions due to choppier, less predictable water states.

Summer weekends can see significant day-tripper traffic around the Delta Expo area. The kite community is generally manageable in size, but arriving early on busy days helps secure a clean launch area and reduces the chance of interference from beachgoers.

Kitesurfing takes place at this location, but Zeeland has designated zones and seasonal rules across many of its waterways due to nature protection areas. It is worth checking current local regulations before your visit, as permitted launch zones and riding areas can be subject to restrictions.
