The setup splits into two very different riding zones depending on where you launch. Inside the lagoon, the sandspit tucks the water away from swell and creates genuinely flat conditions when the north-east fills in. That NE window — running from around 040° to 070° at 12 to 20 knots — is the sweet spot here, and it turns the lagoon into a reliable training ground for learners and riders dialling in new gear. The low chop and consistent pressure make it forgiving, and the enclosed geography means a swim is rarely a drama. Step outside the harbour mouth and the character shifts. When the NE builds, ocean swell rolls through and the outside break suits riders looking for waves rather than flat-water freestyle. The full wind arc runs from 340° around through east to 110°, which means anything in that NE-to-north band gives you workable conditions on both sides of the spit — though the inside stays more rideable across a wider range of wind strengths. Season runs October through April, following the New Zealand summer. That window brings the more reliable north-easterlies and warmer water temperatures. Outside October to April conditions become more variable and less predictable, so plan your trip around the summer months if you're travelling specifically to kite. Getting there from Auckland is a straightforward run north — roughly 85 kilometres, making it a viable day trip or a reason to overnight in the village.
