About Orewa Beach
Orewa Beach is a 4 km stretch of open sandy beach sitting at the head of the Orewa Estuary, roughly 35 km north of Auckland's CBD. It's one of the most accessible kite spots on the Hibiscus Coast — close enough for a day trip from the city but with enough space and variety to keep you coming back. The beach faces northeast, and that orientation is everything here. The best sessions run on a north to northeast sea breeze — typically arriving from around 20° to 45° — picking up through the late morning and often holding into the afternoon during the warmer months. October through March is when conditions are most consistent, with winds in the 12–20 knot range on good days. The usable kite window runs wide, from 20° right through to 160°, so there's a reasonable spread of angles that can produce rideable conditions. At low tide the beach opens up considerably, giving you a proper run-on for launching and enough shallow, manageable water close to shore to make life easier. High tide tightens things up, so checking the tides before you pack the car is worth doing. The wave beach is the main attraction for most riders. It's a genuine beach break — real ocean conditions with shore break, chop, and wind swell when the breeze fills in. Beginners can find their feet here when conditions are light, but as the sea breeze builds and the wave faces develop, it becomes a more engaging ride for intermediates and advanced riders who can read the shore break and time their launches. When the NE kicks in stronger, the Orewa Estuary at the northern end of the beach becomes a genuinely useful alternative. It offers flat water when the open beach is getting messy — a good call if you want to work on kite control without fighting the ocean at the same time. Orewa township backs the beach with a solid range of food options post-session. Cafes and eateries in the area include Casa Del Gelato, Coast Bites and Brews, Dear Coasties, Farm House Cafe, Kuna Bakery Cafe, Muldoons, and Nara Sushi, among others. It's a well-served coastal town with no shortage of places to debrief over a coffee or a meal. Getting here from Auckland is straightforward — State Highway 1 north, then off at Orewa. There's parking along the beachfront esplanade. On summer weekends the beach draws a crowd of swimmers and families, so arriving early gives you more launch room and a cleaner downwind line. The beach is wide enough to find space, but being conscious of where you're launching relative to people in the water is part of the deal here.
