It's one of the few spots on this stretch where kiting is explicitly permitted — Orre to the north is a protected bird reserve, so Hellestø and nearby Byberg are where the action concentrates on this section of the coast. The beach faces west, which means any wind swinging through the southern to northwestern quadrant — roughly 190° to 350° — lands usefully in your kite window. The dominant Atlantic flow here is typically SW to NW, giving you consistent cross-onshore conditions. That's a solid setup: steady pressure off the open ocean, a clean launch from the sand, and an angle that keeps you working parallel to the shoreline rather than straight offshore. Water character is dictated by the open North Sea fetch. There's no shelter here — Atlantic swell rolls in and breaks along the beach, so conditions at Hellestø have genuine surf to them on most riding days. On milder days this is workable for intermediates comfortable with a surf launch; when the autumn storms stack up, the beach transforms into a proper wave-riding venue with serious power. The main season runs May through September, though the tail end and beyond is when Jæren earns its wave reputation. Getting here from Stavanger you head south along the coast onto the Jæren flatlands — the landscape opens into farmland, dunes, and long beaches. Access to Hellestø is straightforward and the beach is wide and sandy, giving you room to rig and choose your entry point. Launch from the sand, commit through the surf zone, and keep an eye on the tide since beach width can shift meaningfully across the tidal cycle.
