About Sønstevatn

Sønstevatn sits in the heart of Telemark, Norway's most rugged inland county, at roughly 60 degrees north. The name says it plainly — vatn is Norwegian for lake — and that is exactly what you get: a freshwater flat far from any coastline, ringed by forested hillsides and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you started kiting in the first place. Getting here takes some commitment. Telemark is not on anyone's kite-holiday checklist by accident, so expect a drive through winding valley roads before the lake opens up. Parking is typically along the access track near the water; nothing fancy, but serviceable. Bring everything you need because there are no convenience stops nearby. The launch area is lakeside, as you would expect. With no tidal variation to complicate things, the water level is consistent, and the shoreline gives you a reasonable strip to set up and depower safely — though you will want to scout the specific bank before committing, since trees and terrain close in at certain points. The water itself is calm by default: freshwater lake conditions mean flat to light chop unless wind builds hard across the fetch, which can happen faster than it looks from shore. Wind here is lake-influenced, driven by thermals and valley channelling rather than any coastal pressure gradient. That means it can be inconsistent — glassy one hour, then a solid gust-front rolling in from the ridgeline. Summer is the practical window: daylight is generous this far north and temperatures are bearable for a wetsuit session. Outside of summer, the lake can freeze and access roads become challenging. For skill level, this is not a beginner-in-the-dark spot. The variable wind character and the forested surroundings ask for riders who can handle gusts, manage a drift back to shore, and self-rescue without panicking. Intermediates who are comfortable in gusty conditions and solid on their self-rescue will find it manageable. A kite school is associated with the spot, which is genuinely useful — local instructors will know the wind patterns, the launch line, and which bank works best on a given day better than any forecast. Gear-wise, think smaller sizes given the potential for gusty gusts off the hillside, but have a bigger kite ready if the thermals are weak. The lake fetch is not enormous, so you are unlikely to get fully powered on a big kite without some chop. A twin-tip is the obvious call on flat fresh water. Facilities are limited to what the kite school provides — do not expect a beach bar or a gear-rental shop unless you have confirmed it directly. This is a working lake in a working Norwegian landscape, and it rewards visitors who arrive prepared and respect the surroundings.
