About Stavasanden

Stavasanden sits on the Jæren coast in Rogaland, southwestern Norway — a stretch of flat, open coastline that faces directly into the North Sea. The name gives it away: 'sanden' means the sand, and this is a proper sandy beach, which is something of a rarity on Norway's otherwise rocky western seaboard. The broader Jæren coastline is the most consistently wind-exposed part of Norway. Positioned at roughly 59 degrees north, the area is wide open to Atlantic weather systems tracking in from the west and southwest. Winds here tend to be honest and direct — no dramatic thermal effects, no complex fjord funnelling, just clean North Sea exposure. That comes with caveats: Atlantic swell can stack up when the wind has had several hundred kilometres of fetch to build, so the water character can shift between manageable chop and something heavier depending on conditions. Check what's been running for a few days before you book your session. The beach itself is broad and sandy, giving you space to rig and sort your lines without scrambling over rocks or dodging pedestrians. Water temperatures are cold year-round by most standards — a thick wetsuit, hood, and booties are not optional here, they are baseline kit from autumn through spring, and even summer sessions at 15–17°C will push you toward neoprene. Build that into your packing. A kite school operates at Stavasanden, which makes this a more supported venue than a lot of Norwegian coastal spots. If you're arriving without local knowledge, that's a useful resource — they'll know what the spot is doing on any given day, where the channels and hazards run, and whether conditions suit your level. Intermediates and above will find Stavasanden workable on a typical windy day; beginners should absolutely connect with the school before entering the water independently. Getting there: Rogaland is well connected — Stavanger has an international airport with good European links, and the Jæren coast is accessible by road heading south. Parking near the beach is generally available, and the flat Jæren landscape means the drive in is straightforward. Bring everything you need from town — this is a coastal spot, not a resort. The honest picture is this: Stavasanden is a raw, Atlantic-facing beach kite spot with real wind, cold water, and a kite school to anchor your visit. It rewards riders who come prepared — right wetsuit, right kite range for variable conditions, and the local knowledge to read what the North Sea is sending through on the day.
