About Fonte da Telha

Fonte da Telha is a long, open Atlantic beach on the Setúbal Peninsula, a short drive south of Lisbon. The spot faces the full Atlantic without the shelter of a bay or cove — wind arrives direct from the ocean, swell runs into the beach unfiltered, and the riding has an honest, exposed quality to it. It's the kind of place that rewards riders who are comfortable in the ocean, and there's enough infrastructure on site to support those working up to that level. The beach is wide and sandy, with a firm launch zone when conditions cooperate. Shore break is part of the deal here — its size and character shift with swell and tide, so always walk the water's edge before you rig. A lower tide generally makes entry and exit more manageable; at high tide the beach can narrow and the break tends to get punchier. Once you're through and upwind, the water opens up into whatever the Atlantic is serving that day — from well-organised chop to messier, mixed conditions when swell is running. The kite school on site, Fonte da Telha, handles lessons and likely hire, so you're not on your own if you're early in your kiting journey or new to this coast. That said, this is not a beginner's first session — an exposed ocean beach with shore break asks for solid water competency and honest self-rescue skills before you launch solo. After a session, you're well looked after. Aroeira Beach and Cabana Beach Bar cover the beachside food and cold-drink side. Aqui peixe & companhia is the fish restaurant if you want a proper sit-down meal. For coffee before you rig, Café do Zé, Café Santa, Café São João, and Café do Velho Cardoso are all nearby. Post-session drinks: As famosas and O bacano handle that. Getting there by car is straightforward — the beach sits on the coastal road south of Lisbon along the Setúbal Peninsula, with parking directly at the beach. Summer weekends fill early, so arrive with time to spare or accept a longer walk. Seasonal wind patterns on this stretch of the Atlantic tend to be most consistent from spring through early autumn. Winter can produce strong sessions, but heavier swells, colder water, and less predictable windows suit experienced riders better. When conditions align — good wind, manageable swell, tide dropping — Fonte da Telha offers genuinely satisfying open ocean sailing within easy reach of one of Europe's great cities.
