About Al Ruvais

Al Ruwais sits at the very tip of the Qatar peninsula, the northernmost point of the country, jutting into the Arabian Gulf in Madinat ash Shamal municipality. The spot faces due north onto an open body of water with nothing between it and the open Gulf — which means when the Shamal comes in from the northwest, it arrives clean, uninterrupted, and consistent. The numbers back that up: around 187 windy days per year, which puts this remote stretch of coast in serious contention for one of the most reliably windy spots in the region. Getting out here takes effort. The drive north through Qatar leaves the more populated south behind and covers significant distance before reaching Madinat ash Shamal. Al Ruwais itself is undeveloped — a raw coastal launch without a car park, facilities building, or flag line marking the kite zone. You'll arrive at open sandy shore, rig in the open, and walk straight in. Straightforward, but remote. The water character is immediately noticeable: shallow and sandy throughout, producing the kind of flat surface that makes reading conditions easier and jumping approachable. The depth is also a hazard to factor in — body drags and crash landings happen on hard sand rather than deep water, which rewards riding in control. Self-rescue skills need to be solid before you go out solo at a spot this far from assistance. The riding area is genuinely vast. Isolated coastline, minimal boat traffic, and the kind of uncrowded space that has become increasingly rare at popular spots. The wind arc covers 270° to 90° — due west through north to due east — so the Shamal in its northwest through northeast iterations all keep you inside the riding window. When the wind is running, the combination of consistent direction, flat water, and open space makes this a strong session. Peak windows are January through March for winter Shamal strength, and June. Outside those periods, sessions happen but with less certainty. On facilities: Acacia is the nearest restaurant at around a kilometre. Arsan Café and Bab al Ruwais are both approximately five kilometres out if you want options after a session. Cavilam Resort covers accommodation in the area. Dhafra Beach Hotel has dining further along the coast. A kite school operates locally in the Al Ruwais / Madinat Al Shamal area — contact them before the trip to confirm availability and whether rental gear is on offer. Al Ruwais is not a spot for kiters who need hand-holding. No lifeguards, no infrastructure on the beach, and help is not around the corner. But for kiters who come prepared, it offers 187 windy days a year, consistently flat water, and the rare luxury of space.
