About Orient Bay

Orient Bay sits on the Atlantic-facing northeast coast of Saint-Martin's French side — a 3 km arc of white sand that catches the island's trade winds head-on. The bay opens directly to the northeast, which means the E/NE trades that blow through from roughly December to July funnel straight in across the Atlantic fetch, arriving consistent and clean. Getting there is straightforward. The bay is well-signposted from the main road on the French side, with parking available near the beach. The launch area is open sand; the beach is wide enough to rig comfortably, though in peak tourist season you'll want to arrive early to claim your space and keep your lines clear of sunbathers. The water character is the headline: a reef sits offshore that knocks down the Atlantic swell and leaves the inner bay notably flat — genuinely flat by Caribbean standards. That setup makes Orient Bay a solid pick for beginners working on water-starts and intermediates nailing transitions without constantly fighting chop. The flat water behind the reef is the default riding area. If you want more texture, the open water beyond the reef is there, but know the reef edge before you push out. The wind window runs 0°–180°, covering north through east to south. The E/NE trades typically deliver somewhere in the 12–25 knot range across the December–July season — enough variety to suit different kite sizes depending on the day. Midday tends to bring the most consistent pressure; mornings can be lighter. Pay attention to gusts: trade winds on the Atlantic side can ramp up quickly on active days.
