About Orient Beach — St Martin

Orient Beach is on the eastern shore of French Saint-Martin — the French half of an island shared with Dutch Sint Maarten — and it's one of the Caribbean's best-known kite destinations. The beach faces east, which puts the ENE trade winds arriving side-shore across the full length of the sand. That angle is as clean as it gets: a cross-wind that lets you work the riding area without drifting offshore or piling into the beach. The trades run 18–28 knots through much of the year, with November through June as the most reliable window. IKO-certified schools operate on the beach — the spot has the infrastructure for proper tuition, which tells you something about its consistency as a venue. The water is the real draw. Behind the reef, the lagoon is genuinely flat — not Caribbean-flat with a nagging chop, but properly calm water that makes progress measurable. When the trades are running, you can put in long reaches across smooth water and come back without fighting any swell. It's a progression spot as much as a high-performance one. Getting there is straightforward — Orient Beach is well-known on the French side of the island and easy to find. The beach draws significant tourist traffic, which is worth factoring in before you set up. The sand gets busy, particularly on weekends and during the European winter peak season. The long beach gives you room to position upwind of the crowds, and the side-shore wind makes launch and landing parallel to the waterline — manageable, but it rewards awareness when the beach is full. Once you're on the water, the flat lagoon inside the reef is your space. The reef holds the swell back reliably, keeping inside conditions clean even when the trades are at the top of their range. That consistency is what draws riders back season after season. The beach strip after your session delivers well. Restaurants at and near the beach include Bikini Beach, C&J's, L'Oasis, Le BZH, and Le Planteur, with bars and cafes — La P'Tite Pause, Dinghy Dock Bar, Good Morning, Good Time Charlie, and Lucky's — filling out the strip. You won't be hunting far for a cold drink or a meal. Best months: November through June. Outside that window, conditions get lighter and patchier. Intermediate-level riders and above can ride independently — the trades are real wind and the busy beach adds management overhead. Beginners have IKO school options on the beach for structured progression.
