About Ngor Beach

Ngor Beach sits on the northwestern tip of the Dakar peninsula, where the Atlantic opens up and the NE trade winds arrive with purpose. Facing west-northwest, this is one of the more accessible kite spots in Senegal — northern Dakar is close enough to the city to keep logistics straightforward, yet the ocean exposure here is real. Just offshore, Ngor Island breaks the horizon; a short local ferry gets you across if you want to explore, but the action on the beach itself is reason enough to be here. The beach has established itself as a kite destination for a reason: the trade wind season runs from November to March, bringing NE winds that hit the shore cross-onshore at a consistent 15 to 25 knots. That direction and the W-NW-facing geometry mean the usable kite window is broad. N wind days add an extra edge — when the wind swings more northerly, riders typically find more power and a slightly different angle to work with. The trade period here is steady enough to build a trip around, though day-to-day variation is normal anywhere on the Atlantic coast. The water in front of Ngor has genuine Atlantic character — this is not a sheltered lagoon. Expect some swell movement and a lively surface. The cross-onshore angle means downwind drift is a real consideration, particularly for less experienced riders; you can cover ground along the shore without noticing. Kite schools operate on-site, which is the sensible way in if you're newer to the spot: local instructors know where to launch and what to watch for on this stretch of beach. Getting to Ngor from central Dakar is straightforward — it sits in the north of the city and the beach is a known landmark. Arriving early in peak season is worth it, both for the wind and for space on the beach. After a session the options are easy. Captain Bob, Kraken pub, and Cosmo Beach Club are the bar-café stops for something cold. For food, the area around the beach has solid choices: Kraken Kitchen, Casa Teranga, La Cabane du Pecheur, L'oasis de la petite plage, La Maison de Celine, King crêperie, and La Pointe des Almadies all sit nearby — more than enough variety to sort out a post-session meal without venturing far. Ngor suits intermediates and experienced riders best. The Atlantic exposure and cross-onshore conditions are manageable, but they reward riders who can handle drift and read open water. Kite school support on-site means you are not figuring it out alone. If you are in Dakar between November and March, this is the natural starting point for sessions on the Senegalese Atlantic coast.
