About Kabeljous Lagoon

Kabeljous Lagoon sits just east of Jeffreys Bay on the Eastern Cape coast — a flat-water estuary that serves as a quiet counterpoint to the punchy beach breaks J-Bay is famous for. While surf-hungry visitors flock to the point, kiters in the know slip away to the lagoon where the water is sheltered and the riding is genuinely mellow. The approach takes you out of Jeffreys Bay toward the Kabeljous River mouth, where the estuary meets the sea. The lagoon itself floods after rain, expanding the rideable surface and deepening the water — worth bearing in mind before you rig up, as conditions vary with both rainfall and tidal state. East wind is your friend here. Coming in cross-onshore from the Indian Ocean, it fills the lagoon cleanly and keeps the water surface flat enough for freestyle moves or long, relaxed upwind runs. The usable kite window spans from north through to south (0°–180°), so a wide range of directions are workable, but E is the sweet spot. When it's on, the conditions here are about as uncomplicated as kiting gets. The flat water is the defining character of Kabeljous. There is no real swell pushing through the estuary, which makes it a genuine beginner-friendly venue — you can focus on body position, board control and kite handling without waves catching you out. The same conditions make it equally useful for freestyle riders who want a smooth surface for pop-and-grab tricks without dealing with chop. Water depth varies with rainfall and tidal cycles. The lagoon fills noticeably after rain, which typically means more rideable area and better depth for waterstarting. In drier spells the estuary can be shallower in places, so checking conditions before committing saves a wasted rig. The best season runs December through March, aligning with the South African summer. Wind tends to be more consistent during this window and the weather is warm, making sessions comfortable from water entry to pack-down.
