About Pollock Beach

Pollock Beach sits on the southern edge of Summerstrand, the beachside strip of Port Elizabeth — known locally as Gqeberha — in South Africa's Eastern Cape. The beach faces south, which puts it in a sweet spot when the prevailing summer winds swing around from the northeast through to southeast. All of those directions fall within the usable kite window (0°–180°) and arrive as side-onshore conditions on the sand. That's a comfortable setup: the wind is working with you on launch and you've got open water ahead. The spot has a grassy rigging area just back from the beach, which makes it one of those places where you can lay out your lines, pump up properly and walk calmly down to the water — no threading through a car park or clambering over rocks. For a city beach that's a genuinely useful feature, especially on a busy summer afternoon when the local kite scene brings out a crowd. The water at Pollock is typically shallow, which is good news for beginners finding their feet and for anyone dialling in their water starts. Shallow water also tends to keep chop manageable rather than steep — a platform that suits intermediate riders well and gives more advanced kiters the kind of flat, open canvas that favours freestyle over big airs. The main season to target is November through March, the South African summer, when northeast, east and southeast winds are most consistent and side-onshore conditions develop reliably. Outside that window ridable days still come through, but if you're planning a trip around kiting, the summer months are the window to book. Pollock is an active, well-used local spot — you're unlikely to arrive and have to figure out the hazards alone. That said, keep an eye on the wind arc: the usable kite window runs from 0° to 180°, meaning any wind pushing southerly outside that range shifts your margin quickly. Check the forecast before rigging and pay attention to the angle on the day. Port Elizabeth is a functional city and the Summerstrand beachfront reflects that — the infrastructure around the beach is solid. After a session the Chartroom Restaurant at ABYC and BeerShack are both in the area for food with a sea view. For coffee before you rig, Dulce's Cafe and Finnezz Fusion Café are options nearby. Cubana and Barney's Tavern cover the post-session drink, and Chicken Licken is there if you just need something quick. Getting there is straightforward — Pollock Beach is part of the Summerstrand beachfront and accessible by road, with parking typically available along the approach. It's close enough to the city centre that a trip to grab forgotten equipment isn't a mission.
