Gimnyeong · Seonsegi Beach sits on Jeju's north-east coastline — a volcanic island roughly 100 kilometres south of the South Korean mainland. The beach faces north-east, angled almost perfectly to receive the winter monsoon, and from November through March that wind reliably delivers. The drive from Jeju City takes you east along the coast road. Seonsegi is a quieter stretch of Jeju's north shore, away from the busier tourist zones. The launch is a sandy beach, open enough to rig comfortably. You will know you have arrived when you spot the wind turbines on the surrounding terrain — visible from the beach, confirming what draws kiters here in winter. The core season runs November to March, when the north-east monsoon arrives on a 330°–60° bearing, coming side-onshore across this north-east-facing beach. The usable kite window spans 320° to 100°, giving reasonable tolerance for direction shifts within that seasonal pattern. Typical monsoon sessions sit in the 15–25 knot range. The water has texture. A sandbank lies roughly 500 metres offshore, generating small, regular waves. Inside the sandbank conditions are generally more mellow; outside, the open ocean adds energy. For wave riders or anyone comfortable on a directional, it is worth exploring — the wave quality is modest but consistent with the swell exposure this coast receives. The main thing to get right before you launch: the upwind exit is challenging. Depending on where the wind sits within its arc on any given day, getting back cleanly to your launch point requires solid upwind riding and a clear re-entry plan. This is intermediate-to-advanced territory. First-year kiters still sorting out their upwind angles should think carefully before launching here, or come with someone who knows the spot. Nearby facilities cover what you need after a session. For food, Myeongjin Jeonbok Abalone Restaurant is the obvious local pick — abalone is a Jeju staple and this stretch of coast is known for it. Café Delmoondo and its Gimnyeong branch offer coffee and lighter bites. Majanggul Restaurant and Haenyeo's Kitchen Bukchon are further options. For accommodation, Cote Dor Hotel, Fly Jin House, and Jeju Beach Hamdeok Hotel are the nearest bases. The Manjanggul Service Station handles a quick drink or snack if you are between sessions. Jeju in winter is not a sun holiday — it is cool, occasionally cold, and the wind is the attraction. A proper winter wetsuit and gloves are not optional for monsoon sessions. The island's volcanic landscape can create localised terrain effects; trust what you observe on the water rather than any reading taken inland.
