About Woljeong-ri Beach

Woljeong-ri Beach sits on the northeast coast of Jeju Island, a north-facing stretch of sandy coast that catches the full sweep of the winter monsoon funneling down from the mainland. The spot is distinct from Gimnyeong Beach about four kilometres to the east — the two share a similar orientation but Woljeong-ri has developed its own identity, partly because of the sandbar-sheltered flat water in front of the beach and partly because of the Instagram-famous café strip that lines the shore behind you. The beach itself is compact but well-suited to kiting, with a gradual sandy bottom and shallow turquoise water behind a natural sandbar. That sandbar is the spot's defining feature: it keeps a large portion of the riding zone flat and manageable, good news whether you're still building water-start confidence or working on tricks without swell interfering. Outside the sandbar the water opens up and conditions become less sheltered, giving experienced riders room to extend. Wind is the main reason to plan a trip here, and the window is November through March. The NW-to-NE monsoon — blowing across the arc from roughly 310° to 45° — delivers 15 to 28 knots across that period, coming in cross-to-side-onshore for this north-facing coast. That's a useful angle: you get consistent pressure through the kite window without the spot flipping to cross-offshore, and a drift downwind keeps you over water rather than pushing you toward land. Outside the monsoon season the spot still sees visitors drawn by the scenery and café culture, but the reliable kiting wind is a winter story. If you're coming specifically to kite, the November-to-March window is where the planning goes. Riding-wise, the shallow flat water inside the sandbar makes Woljeong-ri accessible for all levels. Beginners can use the forgiving zone to practice without battling chop or current. Intermediates have space to push their riding and explore downwind. Experienced riders will find the consistent monsoon pressure and open water beyond the sandbar give them enough room to stretch out a good session. It's not a wave spot — the sandbar and bay geometry keep things flat — so if you're chasing surf kiting, Jeju has other options elsewhere on the coast. The café strip that made Woljeong-ri one of Jeju's most photographed stretches of coast runs along the beachfront. MOUMOON CAFE and several other cafés — including 모래비, 월정리로와, and 해난디아장 카페 — are right there. For a proper meal, 곱들락, 청춘제면소, 푸른밤 돈가스, and 허벅식당 are all in the area.
