Sihwa Lake is a man-made reservoir sitting behind a tidal barrier between Daebudo Island and the broader Gyeonggi coastline, near the city of Ansan in Gyeonggi Province. The Daebudo bridge is the road in — cross it and the lake spreads out ahead of you: a wide, open stretch of enclosed water with no ocean swell and none of the unpredictability you'd get on the exposed coast. It doesn't look flashy, but it rides well. The window that counts runs October through March. That's when a persistent NW-to-west wind tracks across the lake, typically settling between 15 and 25 knots. The SE-facing inner shore catches this flow at a cross-onshore angle — the breeze arrives from your right as you face the water, which is about as clean and safe a launch orientation as you can ask for. The usable kite window covers 40° through to 200°, comfortably containing the full swing of that winter westerly. What Sihwa delivers most reliably is the surface. The tidal barrier eliminates swell entirely — what remains is almost flat water, kicking up only light chop on stronger days. For beginners, this means one fewer thing to manage: focus on the kite and let the water look after itself. For foilers, the setup is close to ideal — consistent upwind pressure, a smooth surface, long runs without interference. Racers and freeriders who want speed over technical jumps will find it suits their style equally well. The enclosed geometry helps too. The lake is large enough for proper upwind runs but contained enough that you're never far from shore if something goes wrong — a safety margin that open-coast spots simply can't replicate. Wind angle and quality can vary as you move around the shoreline, so spend a few minutes reading the conditions before you choose a launch point, especially on a first visit.
