About El Fangar · Delta del Ebro

El Fangar is a narrow sandy spit that juts from the northern edge of the Ebro Delta biosphere reserve into the Mediterranean. On one side, the sheltered lagoon; on the other, open sea. It's an elemental place — flat, exposed, and genuinely wild. The Ebro Delta is one of Catalonia's most protected natural areas, and El Fangar sits at its northern tip where river sediment meets open coast. Getting there means committing to a sandy track. There's no paved road to the spit tip, so come with a car that handles soft sand, or be prepared to walk the last stretch. Once you're out on the peninsula, you'll find a mix of beach and exposed shoreline — the lagoon offering calmer water on the inner side, open Mediterranean chop on the seaward face. The wind that makes El Fangar worth the drive is the Mestral, a northerly to north-westerly flow that funnels down from the Pyrenean foothills and across the delta with real consistency from October through March. When the Mestral arrives, you're looking at 18 to 30 knots of cross-shore wind, typically clean and organised. In summer, a southerly fills in at lighter strength — 12 to 20 knots — keeping the spot rideable year-round without seasonal restriction. The spit's geometry gives you a choice: the lagoon's flat water for boosting and freestyle, or the sea side's open chop for something with more texture. That flexibility is one of El Fangar's strengths. The spit tip is a different story — tidal currents run strong around the point, and anyone without solid upwind ability and a reliable self-rescue routine should stay well back from it. This is an advanced spot; treat it accordingly. There are no facilities at the launch itself. Bring water, food, a pump, and everything else before you leave the tarmac. Several kite schools operate in the surrounding delta area — Deltakitesup, Ebre Surfers Kitesurf & Wingfoil school, and EzyFly are all based nearby and worth contacting for local briefings before heading to the spit. For food and drinks after a session, Beach Club Luna and Flamingo beach bar are within reach. Accommodation options in the area include Casa del Delta, Casablanca El Petit Hotel, Casetes del Delta, Kampaoh Delta del Ebro, and L'HORTET - DELTA DE L'EBRE, covering a decent range of budgets. The biosphere reserve status carries real weight here — respect dune vegetation, stay on the established track, and be aware that protected nesting areas can affect parts of the delta depending on the time of year. El Fangar rewards riders who come prepared. When the Mestral is running and the tide cooperates, it's one of the most distinctive sessions on the Catalan coast: big sky, working delta landscape, consistent wind, and very few people.
