A Lanzada is one of Galicia's standout kitesurf destinations — a long Atlantic beach set within the Rías Baixas, near Sanxenxo and O Grove in Pontevedra province. This is northwest Spain at its most Atlantic: wide open sand, ocean swell rolling in from the west, and wind that takes the place seriously. Access is from the Sanxenxo and O Grove area, both established coastal towns with the services you'd expect. The beach is wide and sandy, giving you space to rig and lay out lines before heading down to the water — though check the tide before you set up, because the tidal range here is significant and the waterline shifts considerably depending on where you are in the cycle. The shore faces roughly west (270°), and the usable kite window runs from SSW through NW — 190° to 350°. SW and NW winds are both consistent here from April through October, typically in the 15–25 knot range. Both arrive cross-shore or cross-onshore relative to the beach face, which means neither puts you directly downwind of a lee shore. That's a useful safety margin on a beach facing open Atlantic swell. The swell is where A Lanzada earns its reputation. Atlantic groundswell arrives reliably, and the wave section here is proper surf kiting — engaging, committed, and not especially forgiving. Experienced wave riders come here specifically for the conditions, and when it's on, it's on. For riders who'd rather avoid the break, the tidal flats that form at lower water offer a calmer flatwater option. Same beach, two different sessions depending on the tide and what the Atlantic is sending that day. Skill level sits at intermediate to advanced. The wave environment requires solid upwind ability, comfort in breaking surf, and the situational awareness to handle a kite when the swell is stacking. The flatter tidal zones lower the bar somewhat, but this is still an Atlantic beach with real fetch — the sea here doesn't stay polite for long. Infrastructure is solid for a spot of this calibre. Two kite schools operate on site — Cursos Kitesurf Galicia and Escuela Kiteboarding Galicia — for lessons or a local conditions briefing if it's your first visit. Post-session, A Lanzada restaurant and a run of bars including A D'Outeiro, Café Sol, Café Suco, Dacosta Bar, and Don Manuel handle food and drinks. Overnight options include Camping Cachadelos Sanxenxo Galicia and Camping Boavista in Sanxenxo. The core season runs April through October. Shoulder months tend to be quieter; midsummer is more reliably powered but this is a popular spot and it shows. Conditions on the Rías Baixas coast can shift quickly, so checking your forecast the evening before gives you the best shot at arriving prepped.
