Playa Lourido is a protected kitesurfing beach on the southern shore of the Ría de Pontevedra, in the municipality of Poio, Galicia — one of the two main kitesurf zones in the region. The spot sits at the mouth of the estuary where a reliable SW thermal develops daily from March through September, peaking in June, July and August. Wind arrives at roughly 280°, creating a side-onshore to cross-onshore window at 12–18 knots — enough for a 10–14 m kite across a wide range of rider weights. The ría geography does the heavy lifting: protected from Atlantic ocean swell, the water stays flat and calm year-round. At low tide a wide shallow flat is exposed, giving beginners a forgiving, knee-deep riding area well away from swimmers. The absence of a Venturi effect — in contrast to the narrower channel conditions found at other Galician spots — means the wind is gentle and consistent rather than gusty and sharp. Two IKO-certified kitesurfing schools operate permanently on the beach: Kite Galicia (Centro KG Lourido) and Kiteboardingalicia. Both offer structured beginner-through-advanced programmes and equipment rental, making Playa Lourido one of the most accessible learning environments on Spain's Atlantic coast. The offshore landmark is Isla de Tambo, a small uninhabited island in the middle of the ría that serves as a useful orientation point and marks the outer boundary of the flat-water zone. Riders visiting in summer should plan sessions around low tide for the largest usable flat. Morning thermals typically build by mid-morning and hold into late afternoon. The beach has parking, and the town of Poio is minutes away for provisions.
