About Los Lances Norte

Los Lances Norte sits on the Atlantic side of Tarifa, stretching north from the Río Jara along an open sandy coastline that faces south. This is the quieter half of the Los Lances stretch — same reliable wind exposure as its more famous southern neighbour, but noticeably fewer riders on the water and more room to rig up on the beach. Tarifa's two signature winds work this spot. The Levante comes out of the east; the Poniente sweeps in from the west. Because the beach faces south, both arrive at a side-onshore angle — launches happen with the wind across the sand rather than pinning you flat to the shore or blowing you straight offshore. The usable kite window spans 90° to 270°, a broad arc that keeps the spot viable across a wide range of wind directions. The main launch runs along a wide, sandy foreshore with plenty of room to lay out lines and walk the kite up without the squeeze common to higher-traffic beaches. The Río Jara marks the south end of this stretch — give the river mouth clearance, and be aware that the available foreshore shifts with the tide. Water character is Atlantic chop. On a strong Levante or Poniente day expect active chop and swell further out; close in, the surface is more manageable. Freeriding is the core discipline here — the side-onshore wind makes working upwind comfortable, and the chop provides enough texture to keep things interesting. Riders looking for waves will find more material further from shore. On more moderate days, the forgiving launch angle and open beach make this approachable for riders still building their skills, though conditions can escalate quickly and reading the tide and the river mouth both matter. Year-round access is a genuine plus. There's no narrow season window to time your trip around — the spot's Atlantic position keeps it in play consistently across all months. For food and drinks after a session, Afrikana, Arte Vida, Chiringuito Agua, El Juncal, and Bar - Restaurante Los Pinos are all close by. El Rancho handles a sit-down meal. For accommodation, Camping Tarifa is the practical base for budget stays; Dos Mares, Hostal El Levante, and Colectivo Ornitologico Cigena Negra COCN provide alternatives depending on your setup.
