About Los Pocillos

Los Pocillos sits on Lanzarote's east coast, squeezed between the busier resort strip of Puerto del Carmen to the south and a quieter stretch of shoreline that gives way to Matagorda. It's a beach that doesn't shout — but on a trade wind day the water tells you everything you need to know. Getting here from Puerto del Carmen is a short drive along the coast road. Parking along the seafront is generally available, though in high summer you'll want to arrive early before the beach draws a full crowd of tourists as well as kiters. The beach is accessible and open, making kit setup and the walk to the water straightforward. The wind that drives this place is the NE trade wind, arriving side-onshore along this east-facing coast. The usable kite window runs from 10° through to 170° — a generous arc that keeps the kite over water through a wide band of conditions, and gives you the option to work upwind or let a downwinder carry you along the beach. That same orientation means Los Pocillos catches more open-ocean chop and wave energy than its southern neighbour Matagorda. When the trades are pumping, expect a textured surface: not a flat-water park, but not a full beach break either. There's usually a workable mix of flatter sections and small waves building on the inside. Intermediate riders are the sweet spot here. The trade wind is largely predictable — clean, sustained, and readable — but the chop and wave energy mean you'll want some water miles under your belt before treating this as your daily training ground. It's a proper freeride spot: link turns, explore the wave sections, cover some distance. Advanced riders may find it less technically demanding than dedicated wave venues, but on a solid trade wind day it delivers satisfying sessions rather than just functional ones. Wind reliability is one of this beach's strongest cards. The trade winds run year-round, with the most consistent and powerful window from May through September. Outside that window you'll still find rideable days, but frequency drops and you'll need to pick your moments more selectively. After a session, the beachfront and immediate surroundings have a solid spread of options. For coffee and a break, Caffè di Fiore, Caffè Ritazza, Coffee Republic, and Tropical are on hand. For food, Cervecería Gambrinus, Camden Food Co., and Pans & Company are nearby. If you're basing yourself locally, Villa Vista Mar II offers accommodation in the area. One thing to keep front of mind: the additional chop and wave energy over Matagorda is real, not just a relative description. Assess conditions from the beach before launching, particularly if you're newer to riding with surface texture. The side-onshore angle is forgiving for self-rescue, but stay aware of boat traffic and the general beach activity that comes with a tourist-adjacent coastline.
