About Palmones

Palmones sits on the northern shore of the Bay of Algeciras, about 30 minutes east of Tarifa, in the municipality of Los Barrios. It's a protected bay — the kind of spot that makes sense once you understand the setup: when the Levante funnels east-to-southeast through the Strait of Gibraltar, it bends into the bay and arrives cross-onshore. That's the usable window — 255° through to 15° — and it's what makes this place work. The water inside the bay is flat. Not choppy-flat-ish, but genuinely flat-water bay conditions. Compare that to Tarifa 30 minutes west, where swell and chop are permanent features, and you start to understand the appeal. For intermediates building water time, or for anyone who wants to work on technique without fighting conditions, Palmones is a legitimate option. Thermal Levante afternoons are the target. From April through October, afternoon heating draws the wind through the strait and into the bay. The thermal character means it builds predictably through the afternoon — easier to read and more consistent than frontal or squall-driven wind. Arrive in the morning expecting nothing much and come back after lunch when conditions are more likely to fill in. The approach from the coastal road between Algeciras and the Los Barrios area is straightforward. The beach is a flat bay beach — nothing complicated to navigate to the water. Rigging and launching is manageable without the chaotic setup you sometimes deal with at busier surf beaches. The cross-onshore angle gives you a comfortable safety margin at launch and keeps you working up and down the beach rather than drifting offshore. Before you launch, scan what's moving on the bay. The Bay of Algeciras handles significant maritime traffic and vessel movement is a real consideration when picking your riding zone. Standard maritime awareness applies here more than at a remote beach — check the water before you commit. Facilities are solid. After a session, a good spread of local restaurants and cafes are close by. For food, Asador de Pollos El Rinconcillo, Asador La Candela, and Asador de Pollos y freiduría de pescado INGO cover grilled chicken and fried fish in the Andalusian way. For drinks or coffee: Bar Casa Flores, Bar La Algaida, Botavara, Bienestar Café, and Café Área Imperial. Bar Raul and Bar Blumen round out the options. It's a local neighbourhood rather than a tourist strip — honest food, local prices. Palmones doesn't aim to replace Tarifa. It's a complementary option: flatter, calmer, intermediate-friendly, and good when the Levante is running thermal afternoons through the summer months.
