Pantano del Ebro sits at 860 metres above sea level in the upper Ebro valley, where the provinces of Burgos and Cantabria meet in northern Spain. This inland reservoir is a long way from any coastline — and that's precisely the point. The surrounding mountains channel a reliable thermal north wind that makes it one of Spain's most consistent freshwater kite spots during the summer months. The main launch is at Cabañas de Virtus, a small village on the reservoir shore. Reaching it means driving into the hill country of Castile and León, following the upper Ebro upstream into a wide mountain valley where altitude and geography conspire to produce thermals on an almost daily basis. It's an inland drive through open countryside — no coastal motorway crowds, no beachside parking chaos. The spot itself is quiet in the way that inland reservoirs tend to be: functional, windswept, and refreshingly honest about what it offers. From June through September, the thermal north wind typically starts building around 10:00 and works up to 12–22 knots through the morning. The mountain-valley funnelling is what gives this spot its edge: the bowl shape of the upper Ebro valley concentrates the airflow and keeps it from dying mid-session, delivering the kind of consistency that coastal spots can rarely match on a daily basis. The usable wind arc runs from 315° clockwise through north to 135°, so sessions typically run with a cross-onshore or cross-shore angle depending on your launch point along the bank. Water conditions are flat and shallow near shore — about as good as it gets for learning or for polishing freestyle moves. There's no ocean chop to fight, no current dragging you downwind, and no reef underfoot. Beginners get a forgiving surface where mistakes stay manageable; freestyle riders get a clean platform for sliders, boards-offs, and unhooked work without lumpy water disrupting the timing. At 860 metres, the air is cooler and noticeably thinner than at sea level. The thermals here are mountain-driven rather than sea-breeze-driven, which gives the wind a slightly different character: it builds gradually through the morning rather than snapping on, and it tends to hold steady once established rather than pulsing unpredictably. Come self-sufficient. There are no listed facilities at this spot — no kite hire, no instructor on site, no café at the waterfront. Bring your own equipment in good condition, your own food, and a full supply of water. What you get in return is a reliably consistent thermal window in a setting that stays genuinely quiet while Spain's coastal breaks fill up with summer traffic. The peak window runs June to September. Outside that, mountain weather is less predictable and the thermals less reliable.
