Rota sits at the northwestern entrance to the Bay of Cádiz, where Andalusia's Atlantic coastline stretches wide and flat before the ocean. Playa de la Costilla — also known locally as Rompidillo — is the main kitesurf beach here: a wide, open sandy stretch that faces west and is perfectly aligned to catch the Poniente. The Poniente is the wind that makes this spot work. Blowing in from the W, SW, or NW, it arrives onshore at Playa de la Costilla and sits squarely inside the spot's usable kite window of 200° to 340°. When it fills in, the local kite schools and resident riders get moving quickly. The beach is wide enough to give you real space for a clean launch, and the sandy bottom means a softer landing if things go sideways while you're learning to ride. Access is straightforward — Rota is a well-connected Andalusian town and the beachfront is easy to reach. Rigging on the wide sand is uncomplicated, but as with any onshore wind setup, manage your downwind space from the start and stay aware of swimmers and bystanders between you and the water's edge. If the wind swings east, Chorrillo beach near the navy base is the local alternative. It handles easterly directions that don't suit Playa de la Costilla, and knowing which beach to head to before you rig up will save you a frustrating morning. Both beaches are within the town, so the switch is quick. The spot is genuinely open to all levels. The sandy bottom and the active school scene make it a good place to learn, and the wide beach gives instructors the room they need. More experienced riders get the open water and reliable Poniente windows. Schools operate year-round here, which is a reliable indicator of consistent conditions across the seasons. After your session, the beachfront and surrounding town offer real choices for food and drink. Bar El Torito, Bar Periquito, Kiosko Camaleon, and Honey Don't Cry are the bar-café options for a quick drink. For a proper meal, El Faro, El Embarcadero, Bar La Concha, and La Alameda all serve as sit-down restaurants. Cantina Marinera Rota and Cooperativa de Venta de Pescado lean toward fresh fish and seafood — the latter connects directly to the local fishing trade, so the menu reflects what came in that morning. Rota's position in Andalusia, combined with school activity that runs through all twelve months, makes it a more than single-season destination. Spring and summer Poniente windows are well-regarded by local riders, but there are rideable days in every season.
