About Valdelagrana

Valdelagrana is a wide Atlantic beach on the outskirts of El Puerto de Santa María, part of the Cádiz coast in southern Andalusia. The town sits roughly 22 km from Jerez de la Frontera, and the beach faces broadly southwest — which puts the dominant thermal wind, the Poniente, almost perpendicular to the shore. That Poniente is the wind that makes this spot worth knowing. A west to southwest thermal that builds through the day as the land heats up, it arrives onshore and pushes relatively flat water in front of the beach. The kite zone sits at the northern end of the promenade, giving you a defined area with room to set up away from the general beach crowd. The beach is wide enough to sort lines, walk upwind, and handle gear without constantly negotiating space with swimmers or sunbathers. For beginners and improvers, the Poniente window is where Valdelagrana earns its reputation. Onshore thermal, flat water, wide beach, a dedicated kite zone: the conditions are genuinely forgiving when that wind is running — not just a marketing line. Intermediates will find good progression water here too, with the flat surface rewarding carving and early technical moves. The usable wind arc runs 165° to 295°, covering the onshore to cross-shore range. When the Levante arrives — an easterly — the picture changes entirely. Levante runs offshore at this beach orientation, meaning lines stretch out to sea and any upwind issue becomes a much more serious situation. That is a wind for experienced riders only, and even then you want to know your exit options before you launch. If the forecast is ambiguous, wait, watch, and read the beach before rigging. Year-round access means this is not a narrow seasonal window to chase. Thermals tend to build through the afternoon and ease toward dusk, so morning arrivals often involve setting up and waiting for the wind to come to you. Getting here from Jerez is a straight drive of about 22 km into El Puerto de Santa María and out to the beach. The northern end of the promenade is your reference for the kite zone. After a session, you are well covered for food and drink. Chiringuito Palapa Beach and El Nuevo Churrasco are restaurants with beach proximity. For a drink or a snack, Bar Las Terrazas, Bar La Isleta, Casa Carlos, Juanito, Chema Y Punto, Bar Gonzalo, Bar Golàs Milwaukee, and Get Smashed Burger Resto are all within reach — a well-serviced stretch of coast with no shortage of post-session options.
