About Son Bou
Son Bou stretches for 3 km along Menorca's south coast — one of the island's longest and most celebrated beaches. The broad arc of white sand faces due south, giving the beach a shore normal of 180° and setting up sideshore conditions from both the southeast and the west. These are the two directions that fall within the spot's usable wind arc of 100° to 260°, and they produce quite different sessions. Approach is straightforward. Son Bou is a well-established resort beach with road access and parking areas serving the surrounding area. The beach is wide and sandy right to the waterline, so rigging space is generally manageable. The main catch is summer: the beach fills with holidaymakers, and launching from the main stretch becomes crowded and complicated. The standard move is to head to the far end of the beach, where you'll find more room to set up and a cleaner launch corridor. The wind character varies significantly with direction. Southeast conditions deliver a clean sideshore angle that suits all skill levels — steadier, more consistent, and forgiving enough for riders still building confidence. Westerly winds are a different proposition. They tend to arrive with more power, particularly in spring, and push the spot firmly into intermediate and advanced territory. When a strong westerly is running, expect a more technical, powerful session with gustier shifts. The south-facing orientation is worth keeping in mind. If the wind swings too far east or west of the sideshore window, there's an offshore element to manage. Check where the wind is actually sitting before you launch — not just the forecast direction. The 3 km length of the beach gives you room to work with if conditions build while you're out, but drifting offshore on Menorca's south coast is not somewhere you want to find yourself. Spring and autumn are the best times to be here. Spring in particular delivers some of the stronger westerly patterns, and you'll have far more of the beach to yourself than in summer. Autumn balances good wind prospects with quieter conditions on the sand. After a session, the options are plentiful.
