Fornells sits on the north coast of Menorca, tucked into one of the island's most sheltered natural bays — a deep, calm inlet that most of the island's exposed coastline simply can't offer. Ses Salines is the kite spot within that bay, and it holds a distinction that matters: it's the only flat-water kitesurf location on the island. If you've been scanning Menorca for somewhere to put down clean runs without surface chop eating your energy, this is it. The bay opens to the northeast, and that's your clue to what works here. Shore normal runs ENE into the bay at around 60 degrees, so a genuine NE or E wind is the ideal — it comes in onshore and fills the bay cleanly. When the wind swings outside that window, expect gusts and inconsistency; the surrounding terrain sees to that. The usable kite window sits between 0 and 120 degrees, so stay within that arc and you're working with the bay's geometry rather than fighting it. Water character is flat. Genuinely flat. The sheltered position means you're not contending with the open-coast chop that defines much of Menorca's shoreline. This makes Ses Salines a genuine beginner venue — the forgiving water state removes one variable so you can focus on your riding. Twintips, hydrofoils, and surfboards all work here; foilers in particular tend to thrive on the calm surface. One thing to factor in: sailboats share this bay, particularly in summer. Winter is the more practical season for kiting — fewer boats on the water, less negotiating your lines around anchored vessels. Summer does bring a thermal from the south, but it's lighter and less reliable than the NE/E flow that comes through in colder months.
