Donkey Point sits on the open ocean side of the Kalpitiya peninsula, roughly 300 metres south of the main lagoon entrance. Where the lagoon offers flat, protected water, this spot gives you something rawer: a genuine ocean-facing point with small waves and real swell. If you've been drilling tacks in the lagoon and want to test your edge, this is the natural next step. Getting to the point means navigating the narrow coastal strip that defines most of Kalpitiya. The peninsula is skinny, with the lagoon on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other — Donkey Point faces the open water. Parking and access are basic; you're arriving at a working coastal stretch, not a developed beach club. Kite up away from the water's edge and read the wind angle carefully before committing to a launch. The usable wind window runs from 180° to 359° — South through West and round to North — with the typical direction being cross-onshore from the northwest to southwest. That cross-onshore angle is what makes the point work: you get a genuine side shore, meaning you can work upwind and downwind without immediately ending up in the break or on the beach. In stronger conditions that cross-onshore component intensifies, and with swell running underneath you, confident upwind ability is not optional. The water character here is the biggest difference from the lagoon. Expect small waves and rolling swell rather than a mirror-flat surface. Chop arrives at irregular intervals depending on weather pattern and swell direction. Body drag recovery is harder in moving water, so solid self-rescue skills matter before you come out here. Ride with at least one other person in the water. Skill level: intermediate to advanced. This is not a learner spot. Beginners should stay in the lagoon — there's no shame in that; the lagoon is world-class flat water on its own. Once you're confident launching and landing independently and can handle chop without losing your board, Donkey Point earns its place in the rotation. The surrounding area has solid infrastructure for kiters. Schools including Bordo Piscina Kite Cafe, Hiru Beach Resort & Kitesurfing, Kalpitiya kite school (KKS), Kiters Heaven School Kalpitiya Sri Lanka, and Kitesurfing Lanka all operate in the area, so local knowledge and equipment are accessible. Accommodation options like Club ManGo - Eco Chic Resort, Kandakuliya Sunrise Beach Villas, and Kiteclub Kalpitiya cater specifically to kiters. For food after sessions, Melissa's Restaurant Kalpitiya and Open Beach Restaurant are both nearby. The smart play at Kalpitiya is to treat Donkey Point and the lagoon as a pair. Use the lagoon when conditions or skill call for it, shift to the point when you want open-water riding with some swell underneath you. Many riders alternate between the two within a single day as the tide and wind develop.
