About Uppuveli Beach

Uppuveli Beach sits on Sri Lanka's Eastern Province coastline, roughly 4 kilometres north of Trincomalee — a short ride from a town that's fast becoming the country's kite hub. The beach faces east, and that orientation shapes everything about how it rides. The main season runs with the Southwest monsoon, May through September, when winds sweep up the east coast and arrive as a clean side-shore on this stretch. Expect 20 to 30 knots through the core of the season — steady enough to plan around, consistent enough that the kite schools operating out of Trincomalee built their timetables around it. The Northeast monsoon, October through January, brings a different flavour: more moderate and variable on the east coast, but still worth checking if you're travelling through. The bay itself is flat and calm, which makes Uppuveli genuinely useful for learning and progression work. There's no significant swell pushing through here — the water character is forgiving, and that's why the schools favour it. An intermediate rider who wants to nail transitions or work on jumps without fighting a chop will find the flatwater cooperative. More advanced riders looking for big air or surf conditions may find it a little tame. The shore normal runs close to due east, so under the SW monsoon the wind arrives from roughly the side — maybe slightly offshore depending on the exact direction on the day. That's a useful angle for a self-sufficient session but worth paying attention to: a side-to-slightly-offshore angle means you want to be confident in your water re-launch and body drag before you're too far downwind. Read the angle carefully each session before committing. Getting here from Trincomalee is straightforward — it's a 4-kilometre run up the coast road. The area around the beach has a solid cluster of places to eat and drink. Angel Inn Beach Seafood Restaurant, Crab Sea Food, and Ceylon Seafood Cafe cover the post-session meal; Be Cool Juice Bar and Seafood Restaurant and Becool Juice Bar are the lighter option. Aqua Restaurant and Bar and Fernando's bar handle drinks. Café on the 18th and Curry & Rice round out the immediate options. Water temperature is warm year-round — this is tropical Sri Lanka, so a rash vest is the call rather than a wetsuit for most riders. Uppuveli is a solid base for anyone working through their early and intermediate hours on the kite. The flat water, reliable seasonal wind, and proximity to established schools in Trincomalee make it one of the more practical setups on the island's east coast.
