Apelviken is a broad bay on Sweden's west coast, roughly 3.5 km south of the historic town of Varberg. The shore faces due west across the Kattegat, and that orientation tells you everything: when westerly and WNW winds build with open-sea fetch behind them, this bay loads up properly. A usable wind window that sweeps from south all the way through north — taking in the full western arc — makes Apelviken one of Sweden's most versatile kitesurfing spots. Direction shifts that would strand you at other beaches often just change the character of the ride here rather than ending it. The bay itself is large and notably shallow across much of its area, which broadens the appeal well beyond any single skill bracket. Beginners get the room and the forgiving bottom to work with. Intermediates have a long, open stretch to develop technique without feeling hemmed in. And when WNW comes in strong with real fetch behind it, the wave quality steps up noticeably — Apelviken has a solid reputation among more experienced riders who come specifically for that side of it. It's a spot that grows with you. The beach is sandy and the launch area is open and direct. There's no awkward approach or rocky foreshore to pick your way through — you rig on the beach and walk in. Parking is accessible close to the sand, which keeps the gear-hauling manageable. One firm constraint to build your schedule around in high season: kiting is banned between 10:00 and 18:00 daily while swimmers are on the beach. This isn't advisory — it's strictly observed. The practical answer is early morning sessions before the beach fills, or evening starts after 18:00. Outside of peak summer, the restriction lifts and you have more flexibility across the day. Accommodation sits close to the action. ApelvikStrand is roughly 200 m from the water — the nearest option. Apelviken Camping Pool, Destination Apelviken AB, and Apelviksgården B&B / Vandrarhem are all within about 1.5 km of the beach. For food, Brittas Strandveranda is a short walk from the water. Cafés and bars are a few kilometres north toward Varberg — Café Ströget, Café Mignon, Espresso House, and Blå Dörren cover that ground. Sweden's west coast water runs cold for much of the year, and the Kattegat reflects that. Wetsuits are the norm outside mid-summer. When the WNW is building, conditions can develop fast on this kind of open fetch — keep an eye on how the session is evolving rather than committing to a fixed end time.
