Maenam Beach sits on the north shore of Koh Samui, stretching roughly 4 kilometres across a gently curving bay that faces north into the Gulf of Thailand. It's one of the quieter corners of an island better known for its party beaches, and that quietness carries into the riding — a long, open bay, sandy bottom throughout, and conditions that suit beginners without feeling trivial to an intermediate looking for a relaxed session. Getting there is straightforward: the beach lines the north coast road that circles the island, and Maenam is a distinct village rather than a resort strip, so the approach is easy and the pace is unhurried. The launch is off the sand. A sandy bottom means wading in is forgiving — no reef underfoot on a downwind, and retrieval is uncomplicated. Water character runs from flat in the mornings when the wind is still building, to mildly choppy as it fills in through the afternoon. Nothing that'll rattle an intermediate, and very manageable for a beginner working on water starts. The primary season runs December through February, driven by the northeast monsoon. Wind arrives from the north and northeast at around 8–18 knots during this window, sitting comfortably inside the 270°–90° usable kite arc. December and January are typically the most consistent months. These are light-to-moderate conditions on average — don't book expecting powered, high-wind days every session, but the directional consistency makes it a workable destination if you time the trip around the monsoon. A second, shorter season runs roughly May through September, when southerly winds come up from the opposite direction. Less discussed but worth factoring in if you're island-hopping and want flexibility around the calendar. Because the wind sits on the lighter side, bring kites from the larger end of your quiver. Flatwater-friendly shapes suit the bay — you're not getting sent to the lip of a wave here, and most sessions are unhurried cruising or low-consequence early freestyle work. The beach is shared with swimmers and general beachgoers, particularly in the bay's central sections, so launching and landing with awareness of foot traffic is standard practice. Maenam isn't a kite park — there are no dedicated schools or rental operations listed at this spot, so arrive self-sufficient with your own kit and the skill level your intended conditions require. After the session, the beachfront has solid options: Angelas Diner, Maenam Cheer Restaurant, Maenam Village Restaurant, Passa Samui, and Samons handle food.
