About Nathon Beach (Koh Samui)

Nathon Beach occupies the west coast of Koh Samui, a side of the island that most tourists skip in favour of the busy eastern beaches. That works in a kite rider's favour: fewer sunbeds, fewer swimmers, and a straighter shot at the southwest and westerly winds that push through during the island's windier months. The spot sits adjacent to Nathon's working pier — you'll see it the moment you arrive. Getting there is simple: the waterfront road runs the length of the beach and parking is easy to find along the seafront. The launch area is sandy and low-gradient, which makes rigging and self-launching manageable. Nothing technical about the setup, but check the tide before committing to a session — the beach can lose width as the water rises, which tightens your available run-up. The usable kite window runs from 203° to 293°, meaning you're riding southwest through west-northwest. These are the directions that come alive during the Southwest Monsoon period, broadly the middle part of the year. When the wind is established and consistent, conditions here tend to be flatter than you'd find on Koh Samui's exposed Gulf-facing shore — the west coast sits in partial lee of the island's topography, which can smooth out chop but also introduce lulls as gusts interact with the land behind you. Read the wind carefully in the first few minutes on the water before committing to a longer reach. The pier is the main thing to know about before you launch. Nathon is an active ferry terminal — boats come and go on a regular schedule, and the approach lanes extend well offshore. Stay well clear of the pier structure and the vessel traffic corridors, particularly downwind. If you're unsure of the current schedule, ask locally before setting up. For intermediates comfortable with variable, side-onshore conditions, this can be a solid session. Complete beginners would benefit from formal instruction before attempting a launch here — the pier traffic and occasional gusty puffs off the hillside behind the beach add variables that reward experience. Post-session options are genuinely good. Krua Savoiey Seafood and Lom Chom Lay both serve fresh seafood a short walk from the water. For coffee and a wind-watch over tomorrow's conditions, Coffman@ThePierSamui, Coffee Island, and Jintana Cafe are all close by. Chao Doi, Ko Dang, early bird, and Aromi Pierside cover the range from casual cold drinks to something more substantial. Ban Somtum handles the Thai staples.
