About Taşucu Bay (Silifke)

Taşucu is a small harbour town on Turkey's Cilician coast, sitting in a south-facing bay just outside Silifke in Mersin province. The spot lies roughly 80 kilometres from Mersin city, and the drive in takes you through the agricultural plains and pine-covered hills that define this quieter stretch of the eastern Mediterranean. It is not a destination you stumble into — you come here with purpose, which also means you rarely share the water with a crowd. The bay itself is sheltered and south-facing, enclosed enough to keep the water inside genuinely calm and shallow under normal conditions. This is the main riding zone, and it earns its reputation as a forgiving environment for intermediates looking to build confidence or freeride without complexity. The shallows near the launch allow for easy water starts and give you room to recover if something goes sideways. The one fixed hazard you need to fix in your mind before launching is the breakwater running along the eastern side of the harbour. It defines the eastern limit of your safe riding area — know exactly where it sits relative to your launch point before the kite goes up. Once you are clear of it and heading into the bay, the water is on your side. Wind arrives from the northwest as an afternoon thermal, coming in side-onshore across the bay. The usable wind window runs from 90° through 270°, and the NW direction falls cleanly within that arc. The thermal pattern typically means calm mornings — good for rigging without rush — with wind building from around midday through the afternoon during the summer season of June through September. Expect winds in the 10 to 18 knot range. That spread rewards bringing two kite sizes: days at the lower end call for something larger, while the stronger afternoon sessions can be punchy enough for a mid-sized kite. If you want more than flat water, the area outside the harbour entrance sees some wave action when conditions align. That is a different riding environment — more exposure, more variables — and is better suited to riders with experience reading open-coast conditions. The calm bay interior remains the core of the spot. Taşucu has a small but genuine kite community. You are not arriving somewhere nobody has flown before, which matters: informal local knowledge exists, and a friendly approach will generally unlock it. That said, do not count on finding rental gear or formal instruction here. Facilities at the beach are basic. Bring everything you need for a self-sufficient session — water, food, sun protection. The town of Taşucu covers everyday essentials, and Silifke is close enough for anything more substantial. July and August are the sweet spot for consistency; June and September are workable but quieter in wind and atmosphere alike.
