The island is reached by ferry or small plane, and neither is a spontaneous day trip from the mainland. Once on Tiree, Balevullin is near the north-west tip, a short drive across the island's flat, low-lying interior. Tiree's unusual flatness means there's virtually nothing to interrupt the wind — no hills, no shelter — and at Balevullin, facing straight into the Atlantic, that exposure is at its absolute maximum.
