This is not a coastline spot — you are riding on warm freshwater in a flat, wide channel system that fans out through the levee roads of the Delta, a landscape that feels nothing like the ocean yet delivers some of the most consistent thermal wind in California. The westerly thermal that drives this spot is its defining feature. Every summer, inland heat draws cool marine air from the Bay hard through the Delta corridor. When it fires, you are looking at strong, sustained westerly wind across a long, open fetch of flat water. It blows onshore at the main launch, which keeps the riding area well-defined but means you need to be composed on setup — gusts can spike quickly and the beach fills up fast on a good day. The launch itself is the part that earns the intermediate-to-advanced label. Conditions here are frequently crowded, and the gusty nature of the thermal demands that you know your kite well before you step into this mix. New riders or those still working on their water starts will find the atmosphere hectic on peak summer afternoons. If you can self-rescue confidently and read the sky for lulls, you will be fine. If you are still figuring those things out, come back with more sessions under your belt. Once you are on the water, the riding is excellent. The freshwater channels offer a chop that is generally manageable, and the warm temperatures make a wipeout nothing more than a minor inconvenience. The wind arc runs broad — from south through west to north — so the usable window is wide, and the westerly thermal tends to track consistently through the afternoon hours of the summer season. Access is straightforward and affordable. Day use is five dollars, and if you want to make a weekend of it, dry camping on site runs around ten dollars a night — a rare bargain for a spot this good. The season runs June through September, tracking the thermal pattern reliably across those months. Bring water, sunscreen, and a good attitude about sharing the launch zone. Sherman Island rewards riders who are organised, calm under pressure, and ready to wait for a clean gap before sending their kite up.
