About North Flats · South Padre Island

North Flats sits on the Laguna Madre — a sheltered, shallow lagoon running between South Padre Island and the Texas mainland — roughly 2 miles north of the main island strip. The spot covers around 500 acres of tidal flat where the water barely reaches waist-deep across most of the riding area, giving you an enormous, obstacle-free space that works for riders at every level. Getting there is straightforward: head north on Padre Blvd for about 2 miles and look for the access point on your left. The flat opens up once you arrive, and the sheer size of the area means crowding on the water itself is rarely a problem. The wind here is driven by SSE flow, with a usable kite window spanning from due south all the way around to north (180°–0°). SSE winds are the reliable engine at this spot, typically running at 15–25 knots. Two windows deliver the most consistent sessions across the year: March through July tends to be the stronger, longer stretch, and October through December brings a solid second phase. Between those two windows, you're looking at roughly seven or eight months of dependable wind. The water is the defining feature. The Laguna Madre is sheltered from open-ocean swell, so what you get on most wind days is flat to barely rippled water across the entire flat — the kind of conditions where you can hold a line for as long as your arms allow. Being able to stand up almost anywhere across the flat changes the experience considerably. It takes the edge off high-speed crashes, makes water starts less intimidating, and gives intermediate riders the confidence to push progression. For experienced freeriders, steady 15–25 kt SSE over glassy lagoon water is genuinely excellent. Because the wind arc covers SSE through north, you'll typically be riding in side-on to onshore conditions, which keeps the flat accessible and the kite in a comfortable window. Accommodation on South Padre Island is well-stocked: Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard South Padre Island, Holiday Inn Express & Suites South Padre Island, La Quinta Inn & Suites, Casa Bella Hotel & Suites, Ramada & Suites South Padre Island, and The Tiki Condominiums are all on the island. For food and drink after a session, Clayton's Beach Bar & Grill and Ted's Restaurant are both on the island and worth knowing about. South Padre Island draws beach visitors through the summer, so the island roads and accommodation can fill up during peak weekends — the North Flats access is separate from the main tourist beach, but factor it into your planning. All told, this is a spot where the water does a lot of the work for you.
