Haserot Beach in Traverse City on Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan. SW-NW winds (220-310°, 12-20 kn). Protected bay with flat freshwater. N-facing launch. Good beginner-friendly conditions on lighter days; full bay exposure on stronger days. Beautiful northern Michigan scenery.
Haserot Beach sits on the southern shore of Grand Traverse Bay's western arm, just north of Traverse City on Lake Michigan. This is northern Michigan at its most scenic — cherry orchards and wine country at your back, and several miles of open freshwater bay stretching north and northwest in front of you. The beach faces north, which lines it up well with the spot's dominant wind pattern. Westerly to northwesterly winds — the broad 270°–90° arc through north — push across open bay fetch and arrive at the launch in decent shape. What you get on the water depends heavily on where in that range the breeze is sitting. With a lighter westerly or SW component, the bay's sheltered geometry keeps chop low and manageable. This is where Haserot earns its beginner-friendly reputation: a gradual water entry, flat to lightly textured surface, and enough open beach to rig and depower without drama. When the wind sits harder in the northwest, the full length of the bay comes into play. Grand Traverse Bay is wide enough to generate real fetch in those conditions, and the chop builds with it. Stronger riders will find plenty of power and room to run. Less experienced kiters should be honest about their upwind ability before committing on those days — getting pushed downwind on a large bay is a different situation from a smaller, sheltered venue, and there's no easy shore to drift to at the far end. The launch area is open sand with clear sightlines and a gradual water entry — no ledges or rocky shelves to negotiate. On peak summer weekends the beach draws a general public crowd, so rig away from swimmers and pick your launch window patiently. Freshwater means no corrosion concerns on your bar or lines, but the Great Lakes run cold outside midsummer. Spring and early autumn sessions — often when the wind is most consistent — typically call for at least a 3/2 wetsuit. Traverse City handles the post-session side well. Kayak Kafe and Mackinaw Brewing Company are the easy casual stops. Amical and the Cellar & Flame Steakhouse work for a proper sit-down. For the morning before you rig, Good Harbor Coffee & Bakery and Espresso Bay are both worth knowing. H&L Social and Milk & Honey Cafe & Ice Creamery round out the lower-key options. For accommodation, Brio Beach Inn and Grand Beach Resort Hotel both keep you close to the water. Haserot Beach won't impress you with dramatic cliffs or ocean power. What it delivers is a clean, accessible freshwater session on a genuinely beautiful bay — and on a good northwest day with clear skies and consistent breeze, that's an easy trade to make.
